2028

In 2028 the MTK approach reaches below the operating system. Cutlass is the systems language. BenthOS is a device operating system written in Cutlass. MerFS is the file system BenthOS devices keep their data in.

Worked example

A pump-station gateway, from power-on to a stored reading

A water utility runs 300 sensor gateways in its pump stations. Each reads a chlorine probe every 10 seconds and has to keep its readings through radio outages of a week or more. An altered gateway image must never start.

  1. The kernel declares the probe as a device. Its register layout, address, interrupt and handler are fixed when the kernel is compiled, so no driver finds hardware by guessing. The handler records the byte and returns; what the reading means is decided above the kernel.

    struct ProbePort with { endian = little, layout = declared } {
        u32 data,
        u32 status,
    }

    static atomic<u8> lastByte = 0

    device ProbePort probe0 with { space = mmio, address = 0x09000000, irq = 33, handler = onProbe }

    interrupt void onProbe(ref<Frame> f) {
        u8 b = u8(probe0.data & 0xFF)
        cut.atomic.store(lastByte, b, order = release)
    }
  2. The probe service declares the most it may ever hold: one file scope to read, one shared segment, one device and one channel. Each arrives at start as a capability in the program's table. A launcher whose own authority does not cover the request gets fault.denied.

    program probed with {
        memory = 16MiB,
        grants = [files(calibration, read), segments([batches]), devices([probe0]), channels([uplink])],
        launch = [gatewayHost],
    }
  3. The application on the gateway is ordinary Trident. It handles each reading as an event and writes it through its readings anchor. On BenthOS that anchor is a MerFS scope; on a hosted server the same source writes to a host folder.

    on event("probeReading", const chest reading) {
        u32 station = reading.station
        u64 sequence = reading.sequence
        f64 chlorine = reading.chlorine
        text name = "station-" + text(station) + "/" + text(sequence) + ".txt"
        u64 written = t.io.writeText("readings", name, text(chlorine))
        if (chlorine < 0.2) {
            t.log.warn("low chlorine at station " + text(station))
        }
    }
What happened

An image with one changed byte stopped at the loader with a named refusal and never started the kernel. A maintenance laptop holding a read-only probe capability asked to write the calibration register and got fault.denied. Through a 6-day radio outage, one gateway kept 51,840 readings in its MerFS scope and sent them when the link returned.

What the 2028 platform adds

Cutlass

A systems language with explicit memory regions, declared devices and interrupts, capabilities that move but never copy, and its own compiler toolchain.

BenthOS

An operating system for devices MTK controls end to end. It verifies each startup stage before the next runs and checks a capability before any device action.

MerFS

The BenthOS file system. A program works inside a scope it was granted, and a new file version becomes visible only once its complete body and metadata pass their checks.

How it relates to the 2027 platform

Hosted MTK runs on Windows, Linux and macOS through host adapters, and it never needs BenthOS. BenthOS is for hardware where the whole stack is MTK: gateways, kiosks, survey drones.

Applications do not change between the two. A Trident program reaches files, devices and the network through what its host lends it, whether that host is a server process or a BenthOS device.
